Birmingham Airport will be fully staffed from 1000z - 1900z on both days, from Birmingham Delivery right up to London Control.

An interesting way to spice things up and a way of seeing different aircraft types and routes at Birmingham.
.

All pilots are cordially invited to take part. You'll see there's hundreds of flights to choose from.
Check out the nice minor airports in the NY area.

There is more to ZNY than JFK, PHL, LGA, and EWR. The ARTCC holds plenty of Class D airports, just waiting to see some action. Some big and some small, each one deserves the chance to be flooded with a little activity on VATSIM. One day each month, ZNY will be staffing a Class D airport, and encourages everyone on the network to check them out. VFR or IFR, general aviation or jet, the choice is yours. So come on, take a detour and join us at a spot you likely haven’t visited before.
This month, NYARTCC is featuring Republic Airport (KFRG) on Long Island. Located right in the middle of the busy New York Class B and the Class C of Islip, this airport is known in the real world for being one of the busiest general aviation airports in the US. It’s time we made it look that way on VATSIM. We will also have Bridgeport (KBDR) and Islip (KISP) airports covered and available for all your needs in the area.
Explore the shores of Long Island, fly in for some time near the city, or just practice your GA skills in this beautiful and busy area.
The event will take place June 3rd, 2012 between 2000z and 0000z (4-8pm EDT). There will be plenty of time for a little day and night flying. Be sure to join the fun!
Questions may be forwarded to
.
Additional information regarding scenery and other relevant charts will be posted soon!

Seven years ago Paweł 'Pawko' Grządkowski (CTR) made us proud of being able to participate in the...

Pawko demonstrated that even an incurable illness like Cystic Fibrosis (CF), he suffered from, is unable to break the real Spirit and shatter human dreams. He gave us a lesson of commitment and dignity in the face of the inevitable. He has indisputably changed our lives forever.
Seven years have passed since Pawko left us and a new generation of VATSIM users has been introduced to our community. We would like to share our memories of Pawko with every VATSIMmer to remember that thanks to him the true Spirit of VATSIM has been and will always remain with us. This Spirit is simply our Pawko himself - full of joy and excitement as we recall the days of his lifetime.
Pawko - The Spirit of Vatsim Flies High.
Please read more regarding Pawko's story at:

To commemorate the 7th anniversary of Pawko's departure for his eternal flight PL-VACC Controllers would like to invite all the Vatsimmers to participate in the next edition of Papa Golf Memorial Fly-In dedicated to the memory of Pawko and the fight against Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The event will take place within the EPWW FIR on 27th of May 2012 between 16:00 and 22:00 UTC.
As always, there will be something special in the air. Thanks to the kind consent of the VATGOV, in connection with the fly-in we will be raising funds for charities fighting the CF disease (on purely voluntary basis). Since VATSIM is a 100% free of charge environment it is very important that you have read the rules which are available at: <link http://pl-vacc.org/pg2012/#zasady _blank>www.pl-vacc.org/pg2012/

Again, you do not need to donate any money to participate in the event.
The sun has headed north of the equator and it's time once again to take to the skies of the South Pacific as we Cross the Ditch!
For eighteen hours this May, the skies over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand will be filled with aircraft all on a mission to Cross the Ditch.
An example of that typical down-under understatement, this "ditch" is over 1100nm wide. The flight routes all range from two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours flight time.
Throughout the event, the Oceania region's two divisions –
and
– will be providing full ATC coverage, in the Southern Hemisphere's premiere oceanic event.
This is a great opportunity to experience Oceanic flying without the need to commit to an eight-hour flight! If you're new to Oceanic Flying, our
makes taking part a breeze.
This eighteen hour event is timed to allow pilots from all over the world join the fun:

The Hamburg Port Party is simply the biggest party in Northern Germany. Join in.

Approx. 1.5 million spectants are joining in to this spectacular three-days event in Hamburg. The area around Harbor-city is filled up with windjammers, nostalgic vessels and an uncounted number of larger and smaller boats joining in to the celebration parade.
But also the air will be filled up with party-guests. Lots of aircraft on their way from or to Hamburg are parading by. Helis, general aviation aircraft, even balloons and nostalgic props with and without floats are to be seen along the party mile.

By the way: this is a Real Life Event.

All controllers will be working together at the Café Himmelsschreiber, which is located directly beside the General Aviation Terminal of EDDH-Airport. So you can expect the best ATC, live from the real airport. So, if you are in the neighbourhood (real world) you are really welcomed to join in at the café.
And for you virtual pilots, this is prepared: Low approaches, go-arounds with special missed approach vectors, to see more of the harbor are of course available upon request. Our ATC-team will do the best to make your evening unforgettable.
You don´t want to fly IFR? VFR is as welcome as IFR is it and finding your way through the crowded airspace with a little plane gives you the best impression of the second biggest city in Germany and it´s biggest festival of the year.
VATSIM Germany invites you to the virtual party flyin on Saturday, 19th May 2012.

This will be the programm:

EDDH is on duty for five hours (16:00 - 21:00UTC). Fully staffed and extra frequencies open So, you may bring the participants to the party-zone. Also longhaul-flights are more then welcome. We will be online just for YOU!

VFR-pilots: You may join in in our special control-zone in and around the birthday-mile.

IFR-pilots: You may request a low pass inside the Harbor zone when flying from or to EDDH and you may enter our special control-zone covering the birthday-mile. This will give you the rare chance to enjoy the fantastic Hamburg City freeware scenery.

There will be special landing zones for helis and waterplanes inside resp.right next to the Harbor area. (EDHI_TWR)

Enjoy the stunning freeware-scenery for Hamburg, made by Mr. Dirk Brandenburg

British Airways Virtual is proud to present its tenth major OverNighter Event.

IN MEMORY OF BAV PILOT SVEN ADAMSKI - REST IN PEACE
However, this time, we are holding an ALL DAY long haul event with pilots flying out to the place where this all started - Los Angeles International Airport in the heart of Southern California.
We also dedicate this, our TENTH OverNighter event to one very special former member pilot - SVEN ADAMSKI. Sven was a long time pilot member of British Airways Virtual who lost his battle with Lukemia and passed away in February of this year. Rest In peace my friend - Blue Skies to you always
British Airways Virtual pilots will depart London Heathrow Airport on the morning of Saturday 19th May 2012 to simulate the daily BA283 service that serves the City of the Angels from London. Pilots are expected to make landfall some 11 hours later after the mass flyout from the UK. This is our first DAYTIME long haul event and it is hoped that there will be more, as well as the ever popular and challenging overnight flights that we undertake and that are the hallmark of the OverNighters.
Departure slots will be available for a three-and-a-half hour time window starting from 10:00Z (11:00 UK Time) until 13:30Z (14:30 UK time) on Saturday 19th May 2012. Slots will be available on VATSIM and online ATC will be provided on VATSIM for the departure out of Heathrow by VATSIM UK, as well as, hopefully VATUSA in the form of the Los Angeles ARTCC for the arrival into the United States some 11 hours later.
We will also try to arrange as much enroute ATC as possible for the flight on VATSIM. A special Pilots Briefing will be posted nearer the event date which will include the latest information to allow our pilots to make a safe approach into KLAX on the day. This event is open to ALL BAV Pilots and the Aircraft Substitutions Policy will be lifted for this major flyin event - so pilots may fly any British Airways operated aircraft that is capable of making the flight.
Will we all make it? Can we stay alert through the 11 hour flight to make a safe landing at the end? How many of you can rise to the challenge? We'll see what happens ...

ATC Training initiatives

The VATSIM Executive Committee (EC) has set forth to explore ways to improve the ATC training...

A major initiative in this area has been the ongoing trial, and subsequent staged introduction of solo students, with the main idea that a student deemed ready to sit his/her exam can practice with out a mentor at select facilities, i.e. S2/APP, S3/CTR. The purpose of this is to reduce the waiting times for mentoring sessions, this program frees the mentor for students that need the guidance.
EC member Thomas George in discussing the S2 on Approach and the soon to be trialed S3 on Centre stated "To reduce the demand on mentor time we are introducing the option for local facilities to allow members to practise solo as they approach CPT-readiness on Approach, subject to certain restrictions. Not only does it allow us to get more people online but it also capitalises on the candidate's desire to get through their CPT in terms of online time. VATUK ran the trial and saw that approach positions in Bristol, Liverpool as well as Midlands and Essex (Stansted/Luton) were much more prominent in the weekly Iron Mic results..."
To date the results have been very good, and the students participating have leapt at the chance to continue their VATSIM journey in this manner. One eager participant was quoted as saying "To be honest, its the best thing since sliced bread!
I can put the hours in and become - the key word here "comfortable" working the position with live traffic in the run up to my pre-exam and then finally exam on the position.
I am already ticked on all competencies as "exam standard" in my training, the drawback is confidence in manning the position, The SAV gives me this without the need to have a mentor present, and the bonus in this, is that it frees up the mentor to assist other students and bring them also up to exam standard.
The SAV will give me the time to practice, become familiar, and instil the confidence to have a better chance of pulling off the exam.
Without the SAV, I believe it would take far too many hours of mentors time just to have him sitting above just observing.
Being assessed as exam standard on all competencies is one thing, putting these things into practice before the exam with traffic is another and takes time, that time is allowed under an SAV. (emphasis added)
I hope that they stay for good for the up and coming members of the society"
The VATSIM Board of Govenors' fully supports the Executive Committee in its endeavours to improve the ATC training program, and openly appluads all VATSIM staff for the efforts they have put into ensuring these trials have been the success they are.
Steven Cullen
VATSIM VP Operations
on behalf of the VATSIM Board of Governors'.
